Halifax Hypothermic Half
I am pleased to be writing this from the comforts and warmth of the house, not stuck on a beach on the Atlantic Ocean…
A definite chill was present in the air well preparing for this mornings Halifax hypothermic half marathon… Chris Sinclair, from The Weather Network, was reporting a temperature of -11 with wind chills in the low -20’s. The positive, no inclement weather was forecasted and the sun shone bright in the February sky.
All the hype and talk of the Ironman took away all tensions and stress on the eve of the half, I may have thought of the race only a hand full of times. That was all reversed this morning, it started with the temperature than was compounded upon exiting the car at the race… The winds howled and my choice of dress didn’t seem sufficient… I decided to put on an extra fleece layer on top of the three I already wore and cracked open some Hot-Paws for toasty hands… It was like a big hug.
I also ran a 1 mile warmup, which I don’t usually do… I think this actually helped to warm me up a little…
And since I had a Cliff Chocolate gel in the cupboard, I decided to try it out on race morning… I report; I enjoyed it and feel it worked although I don’t really know… I wish I had another if that’s any indication…
I was glad to see the race start, even happier to see the finish. Halifax is known for its hills, this race had its fair share. The course was an out and back with approximately 350 participants..
I finished in 1.38… I was happy as most of my training took place indoors, on treadmills, and I didn’t think I would crack 1.40… Optimism paid off…
Now it is time for some beer, chips and quality couch time…
Cheers
Woohoo!! Congrats! Enjoy the beer and couch time, well deserved 🙂
Great job man!!! Very inspirational 🙂
well done! the ‘some beer, chips and quality couch time’-part is that I love afterwards, keep on running
Congrats!
Holy mother! Only us weirdo Canadians run in weather like that! Cogratulations and such an excellent race! Beer, chips and football are you reward today 🙂
Congratulations on finishing so well! I don’t even like running out to get the papers in the mornings when it’s that cold… It must be extra rewarding having run it under not so ideal conditions!
Many congratulations – I hope the beer was cold! 🙂 Chips – Yummy! Carb loading rules!
You ROCK!!!! Have a beer for me :))
Way to go! I can’t wrap my head around how cold and difficult that must have been!*
Wow. Congratulations. Enjoy your well deserved couch time 😀
That’s pickin’ ’em up and puttin’ ’em down. Nice.
Wow! Congrats on the race ! Those temps sound terrifying!
Well done – good time too.
rock on, BR…way to crank it out! I actually wondered about your climate as I did first snowshoe with dog this morning…not terribly cold, though, 20s F.
Glad you enjoyed the triple threat idea, aka, reverse tri-train! Enjoy your well won day~
Congratulations and a BIG well done – enjoy that well deserved beer 🙂
Super Race! I think the Gu, would serve you well. Clif makes a chocolate Cherry one that I tried out recently, it was great.
Im so impressed that you treadmilled so much training and then threw down that impressive time. Nice.
Way to go! That is an excellent time in those weather conditions. Not sure if I could ever run in a temperature that cold, but maybe after a few more years of training.
Wow, great job! Reading what you’ve accomplished via treadmill makes me think I should never feel sorry for myself when I’m “stuck” running indoors….
wow! I stuck to the treadmill because it was 30 degrees! inspirational 🙂 congrats!
Way to go! Kudos for braving the cold and surpassing your expectations.
Awesome time!! Congrats 🙂
Superb! Running outside in these temperatures makes the winter more enjoyable and shows the world what Canadians are made of. Congrats!
Great time! You’re an inspiration!
Way to go.. I hope to crack my ‘half’ time in a few months. Although my target is a half hour than your finish time. 🙂
Congratulations! Great job on a tough race. And I love Chocolate GU! Tastes like fudge icing.
GU Rocktane!!! Cherry and Pineapple are AWESOME! Far better than standard Gu.
I’m cold just thinking about it 🙂 Well done on the extreme run … Have some beer and chips for me 😀
Congrats on breaking 100 min half. On a hilly course too.

Off to eat some chocolate to celebrate your run 🙂
Rather you than me in those temperatures! Congratulations on the finish and the time 🙂
Congrats!! That’s a great time & it sounds like a tough course. Good work. 🙂
I’m a little late, but WOW. Congratulations!!! And what an amazing time, at that… I hope you’re still drinking some beers. I would be!
Best part of a run = celebratory beer.
Living in Florida, I just can not imagine running a half in that kind of cold! That is fantastic! Not that I would not be crazy enough to do it myself…because I am ….but I have a hard time thinking about it! Go you!
On another note..have you tried GU gummys? They are great! I have a hard time stomaching the cliff shots and the GU is pretty good tasting and does not stick to your teeth like the cliff blocks. My favorite flavor is peach tea.
